The Complete UK Moving Checklist — 8 Weeks To Moving Day

MoveQuoteLocal Editorial··9 min read

A week-by-week UK moving checklist — from booking a surveyor and notifying utilities to packing the essentials box for moving day.

A house move is one of the most stressful life events most of us go through — but almost all of that stress is avoidable with a calm, sequenced plan. This is the same eight-week schedule used by professional UK removals companies, adapted for an owner-occupier or renter doing most of the coordination themselves.

8 weeks before — survey and quotes

Book at least three home surveys from vetted, fully insured UK removals companies. A proper survey takes 20–30 minutes and produces a fixed, written quote — anything quoted over WhatsApp without a survey is a guess.

6 weeks before — declutter ruthlessly

Every box you don't pack saves roughly £8–£15 in labour and van space on moving day. Charity shops, Facebook Marketplace and your local council's bulk collection service are your friends.

4 weeks before — notify the world

  • Utilities — gas, electricity, water, broadband
  • Council tax and electoral roll
  • Bank, credit cards and insurers
  • GP, dentist and any subscription services
  • Royal Mail redirect (do this online — takes 5 minutes)

2 weeks before — packing begins

Start with rooms you barely use — lofts, garages, spare bedrooms. Label every box with the destination room and a one-line description of the contents. Future-you will be grateful.

Moving week — essentials box

Pack one clearly-labelled essentials box per person: a change of clothes, toothbrush, phone charger, medications, kettle, mugs and tea bags. It travels with you, not in the lorry.

Moving day

  1. Final meter readings (photograph them)
  2. Walk the property with the lead remover
  3. Check every cupboard, loft and shed
  4. Hand keys to the agent or buyer
  5. Eat something — it's a long day
