The Best (and Worst) Time to Move House in the UK

MoveQuoteLocal Editorial··6 min read

Removals prices swing by up to 40% across the year. Here's when to move for the lowest UK prices, best weather and shortest waits.

Removals is a capacity-constrained industry. Every UK removals company has a finite number of crews and lorries, so prices rise and fall with demand exactly like flights or hotels. Pick your week wisely and you can save 20–40% on the same exact job.

Cheapest months: January, February and November

Demand drops sharply after Christmas and through autumn half-term. Removals companies are hungry for work, mid-week slots are wide open, and you'll often get the company's senior crew rather than agency staff.

Most expensive: end of June through early September

Schools breaking up, university lets turning over, and the traditional summer completion rush all collide. Add the academic-town effect in Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, and you've got the year's tightest market.

Best day of the week

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Avoid Fridays at all costs — they're booked first, priced highest, and a Friday completion that slips puts you in temporary accommodation over the weekend.

Best day of the month

Mid-month (8th–22nd). End-of-month is when most completions land, so removals companies are running flat-out and there's no slack if anything goes wrong.
